Groupon, Inc. Seattle WA. 2014–present: Director, Software Engineering - Mobile Applications

2022-present: Director of Software Engineering, Groupon Mobile

I currently lead and am responsible for the Groupon Mobile Team and Groupon Mobile consumer experience. The mobile applications my team develops contribute 70% of the company's total revenue. My responsibilities include end-to-end ownership and delivery of the Groupon Mobile applications on Android and iOS.

2019-2022: Senior Engineering Manager, Groupon Mobile

As a Senior Engineering Manager, I ran the Mobile Core Team consisting of twelve engineers and one engineering manager, responsible for architecture, performance, telemetry, and operational monitoring of Groupon Mobile applications' key metrics. My team also oversaw the consistency of approaches and design decisions between Android and iOS mobile platforms.

2016-2019: Engineering Manager, Groupon iOS

As an Engineering Manager, I led the iOS Core Team of 6 engineers responsible for architecture, performance, telemetry, and operational monitoring of Groupon iOS Mobile app's key metrics.

2014-2016: Technical Lead, Groupon Getaways iOS

Responsibilities included providing technical leadership for a team of iOS developers implementing and delivering Groupon Getaways iOS mobile app.

Black Rock City LLC. Gerlach NV. Aug-Sep 2018: Petrol Dep. Technology Lead

Burning Man is an annual event focused on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. Burning Man is held in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, and attracts about eighty thousand participants.
My responsibilities included:

  • Holding technical training sessions for the Petrol Department personnel
  • Providing support for in-field fuel operations
  • Producing fuel tracking and dispensing reports
  • Ensuring data exchange between the department's Fulcrum in-field data collection system and Black Rock's Salesforce CRM.

ReveStory LLC. Seattle WA. 2012–2014: Senior Software Architect / Technical Lead

My responsibilities included leading a team of engineers to design, implement and deliver a self-publishing platform that enabled customers to create, self-publish, order hard copies, and share electronic versions of photo book and greeting card products.

Digiboo LLC. Santa Monica CA. 2010-2012: Senior Software Architect

Digiboo LLC, founded in 2009, was a location-based retail download service providing movie and TV show downloads to mobile devices. Kiosks with thousands of movie and TV show titles available on-demand allowed downloading media directly to phones, laptops, and USB 3.0 storage devices at speeds of 1–3 minutes per full-length feature. Digiboo kiosks had been deployed across hundreds of locations within the United States.
My responsibilities were designing and implementing client-side technology, delivering software for v1 of Digiboo digital assets vending kiosk and developing infrastructure for near real-time remote status monitoring and automatic software and content updates.

MePlease, London UK. 2009-2011: Software Architect

MePlease was a company building a customer loyalty platform to connect small businesses with their customers.
As a member of the engineering team, I designed and implemented critical parts of the server-side infrastructure and components supporting consistent HTML rendering across a variety of mobile devices. I also was the primary owner of user account management and user onboarding sub-systems and integration with Facebook API's.

Angry Oyster LLC, Kirkland WA. 2008-2011: Founder / iPhone Developer

Angry Oyster was a two-person garage startup exploring possibilities of the then-new iPhone platform for one-off postcard self-publishing. As a founder, I was responsible for:

  • Product and service definition
  • Architecture, development, and delivery of iPhone client app
  • Integration with server back-end and payment processing systems
  • Product life cycle support
  • Interaction with the print partners
  • Customer support

Contour, Inc. Seattle WA. 2008-2009: Senior Software Engineer

Contour (known initially as Vholdr) was a company developing consumer-friendly action video cameras.
As a two-person engineering team member, I designed, implemented, and delivered Contour's multi-platform (Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows) desktop Storyteller application. Storyteller interfaced with Contour's action video cameras, allowing for download, tagging, editing, and sharing users' videos.

ClickStar, Inc. Santa Monica CA. 2007-2008: Senior Software Engineer

ClickStar was a provider of on-demand Internet streaming media. I was the primary feature owner of ClickStar's large-screen experience, implemented as a dedicated Windows Media Center application.

Microsoft, Corp. Redmond WA. 1998-2006: Software Design Engineer

  • Co-author of seven patent applications.
  • Internet Explorer v5.5, v6.0. I was the engineering owner of HTML Table Layout and Pagination / Print Preview feature areas, as well as a contributor to CSS-compliant layout behaviors of mshtml.dll.
  • Windows Presentation Foundation (aka Avalon / XAML). As a member of the layout team, I contributed to the project from inception to delivering v1. I co-designed WPF's layout system and system of layouts, and was the feature owner of Table and Grid layouts.
